Charles began his automotive career working at a Subaru dealership in Littleton Colorado. There he found his passion for working on cars. He worked there for over 10 years and ended his stay there as a Subaru Senior Master technician. He is highly knowledgable in the maintenance and repair of Subaru vehicles. If you call Cars and Locks rest assured he has what it takes to diagnose, repair and service your Subaru.

So let’s start out with a respectful nod to Subaru’s great qualities. They have terrific symmetrical awd. This means that all 4 axles are the same length and power is distributed evenly to all 4 wheels. Ever been in a snow storm in a Subaru. One of the all time greatest joys of being alive. Muah.

Subaru’s are also known for their boxer engines, in which the cylinders are horizontally opposed. Picture 2 boxers with their backs to each other punching outwards. The benefit of this engine is that rotational force is canceled out resulting in less vibration and lower center of mass resulting in better handling.

Lastly but obviously not least is style. Let’s not pretend Subaru isn’t one of the coolest out there. It takes a master of deception to not stare agape at one passing by. As diametrically opposed as the engine is are the array of people that look great in one of these class acts.

As great as these cars are they won’t continue chugging along with just a little hope and a dream. Regular maintenance is required. We are talking regular oil changes. We recommend 3,750 mile oil and filter changes with conventional oil, every 5,000 miles on a turbocharged engine that takes synthetic oil and every 6,000 miles on the naturally aspirated engine that takes synthetic oil. Not performing this basic service on time can result in a plethora of issues such as oil leaks due to the oil becoming acidic and eating up the seals, cam timing codes due to sludge build up clogging small oil pathways and worst of all '“rod knock” the dreaded knock heard most loudly at around 2500 rpms when it is present. This is the sound of the piston rod tapping against the crankshaft because the rod bearing has been destroyed from lack of lubrication. This requires a complete rebuild or replacement of the engine. To add even more expense, everything that oil goes through in the engine that is not able to be thoroughly cleaned will need to be replaced so as to prevent another failure. This is because small metallic particles will be spread throughout the entire system that will potentially cause future issues.

Other maintenance items that should be performed are having the brake fluid flushed every 30,000 miles or 2 years. Differential and transmission fluid inspected and replaced if necessary, air and cabin filters inspected and replaced if necessary, coolant flushed around 100,000 miles and a fuel induction service performed around every 30,000 miles. This service helps clean carbon deposits, can help improve fuel economy and is especially important for direct injection vehicles. This is because carbon builds up on the intake valves and has no way of being cleaned off like port injected models are, resulting in valves sticking open causing a misfire. Particularly on cold startup. Lastly, the spark plugs should be replaced every 30,000 miles on vehicles with a coil pack and wires and every 60,000 miles on vehicles with a coil on plug system.
